Propolis is an amazing product made by honeybees. It is a stiff, sticky substance that bees make from tree resin. It consists of various organic acids, essential oils, many flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and 16 amino acids. It has been used for centuries by people all over the world, for medicinal and health benefits.
Today, it is used widely throughout world foranadjuct therapy when ill and as a health supplement. Many people use propolis as a natural antibiotic, preferring it over prescription medications which play havoc with the body. Unlike prescription antibiotics, propolis does not destroy intestinal flora.
The National Institute of Health states the flavonoids in propolis have antibiotic, antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It is also an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory effects. Research is being done on propolis as a treatment for cancer, micro-bacterial lung infections including TB, radiation treatment burns, GI issues, herpes, wound treatment, boosting the immune system and many other diseases and ailments.Propolis can be taken orally for colds, viruses, bronchitis, pneumonia, IBS, sore throats, and as a preventative supplement.
Propolis in various forms, can be used internally for sinus congestion and infection – as nose drops (mix with saline); for canker and mouth sores, gum irritations, and infections – as mouth rinse; for toothaches/infections – as a rinse or gauze poultice; and for ear infections – drops in ear.
Externally, propolis can be used as is, or mixed with lotion, for cuts, burns, bites, rashes, skin infections, pain and inflammation, sore muscles, nail fungus, yeast infections, athlete’s foot, sunburn, and any other skin irritation.
