It was brought to my attention last week that September is in fact National Honey Month. Honey gets an entire month all to itself?  Why yes, it certainly does.  We celebrate it at the Lithopolis Honeyfest, in Lithopolis Ohio!

Turns out that Americans consume 1.5 pounds of honey per person annually, and there are more than 300 types of honey in the United States alone. That’s impressive, and we figured that if honey gets to be honored all month long, the least we could do is give you 20 different uses for it. Enjoy!

1. Put it on your lipshoney on lips

Did you know that making your own lip balm is as easy as tracking down some almond oil, beeswax and honey? Sure is. Makes you feel a little guilty about that $10 version you picked up at the health food store yesterday, doesn’t it?  Lip Honey made by BEEpothecary

2. Make your own honey moisturizer

If you’ve got a handful of sweet smelling herbs — think lavender — laying around and ready to be used, why not use them for your own homemade honey lotion? Warm honey over a saucepan until it gets to a liquid consistency. Pour honey over herbs and cap tightly; the ratio you want to use is 1 tablespoon of herbs per 8 ounces of honey. Let sit for a week and then mix 1 teaspoon of liquid into an 8 ounce bottle of unscented lotion.

3. Eat it with goat cheesehoney and goats cheese

In need of a classy hors d’oeuvre but lacking in the time department? Try this: put a round of goat cheese in a ramekin, sprinkle honey and chopped walnuts on top and place in oven at 350F until honey and cheese are both soft. Serve with baguette or crackers and you’ll be the life of the party.

4. Prepare for the end of the world

You never know what’s going to happen, so stock it. Now.

5. Drink it

We all know a drop of honey in tea is good for a sore throat, but you can add it to most drinks for an extra energy boost. And simply because it’s a whole lot better than tossing in a few Sweet ‘N Lows.

One of my favorite and easiest fruit salads uses just a touch of honey to enhance the sugars in the fruit, and it’s a perfect late summer dessert.
1 cantaloupe, chopped
3 nectarines, chopped
4 tablespoons chopped basil
2 tablespoons honey
Mix together and enjoy!

Honey is a natural humectant with antimicrobial properties, which means your skin will be happy when you give it some sweet honey love. Try a basic honey wash by mixing a dollop of honey and two tablespoons of warm water and massaging the mixture into your skin. Or you can go all out and try the Cucumber Honey Facial.

8. Go the extra milebeebread no bakes

Forget energy bars and shots, just pop a tablespoon of honey before your next workout. Seriously, it has been proven to boost athletic performance.

Got a post-Southeast Asia backpacking trip bug that just won’t leave you alone? Mix up a good blend of honey, water and vinegar and you’ll quickly be on your way to being parasite free.

Honey can actually be used as an antiseptic, like a natural Neosporin. Because of its many antimicrobial properties, it can be used to treat wounds and even burns.

Forget a morning of popping ibuprofen, spread some honey on your toast or add some to your tea. Because honey is loaded with fructose, it will help speed up the metabolism of alcohol.

Nothing’s worse than scratchy elbows (no really) so next time, after you’ve washed and scrubbed, rub some honey on to soften the skin. Leave on for 30 minutes then wash off.

Honey is an excellent exfoliant. You can pair it with ground almonds or bee pollen and lemon juice for a killer homemade facial scrub.

Yes, it can be done! One of our fave food bloggers Clotilde Dusoulier, of Chocolate & Zucchini, put the ingredient to her readers and got some fun responses. The best sounding one? Mix it with crunchy peanut butter on toast.

Feeling a tad lethargic? Skip the coffee and go for the honey instead. Mix a tablespoon into a cup of tea and you’ll be feeling better in no time.

In the shower, after you wash your, coat the ends with a bit of honey. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing out and you’ll find that your hair is less frizzy and extra conditioned. Or make your hair shiny and bright by adding one teaspoon honey to one quart of water, and after washing your hair, pouring the mixture over your head. Let dry and enjoy your new-found shiny do.

Jam is so five years ago; show you’re truly cutting edge by preserving your fruits in a honey sauce. All it takes is one part honey to ten parts water and then covering your berries. Pretty much the closest you’re ever going to get to bottling up a little bit of summer.

Add a few tablespoons of honey to your bath, for sweeter smelling, softer feeling water. Pure bliss.

Well, what were you expecting? With a list this long it had to be pretty apparent that honey is in fact a wonder food, and as it turns out, you can even make it part of your next weight loss plan. Honey is an excellent substitute for sugar and it also helps speed up metabolism. Just remember: all things in moderation.

The day has come for me to change my eating habits.  I’ve been trying to lose a few extra cheeky pounds.  Really, I’m ok with my weight and how I look, but when last years summer shorts are far to tight around my mid-section. It’s time to change something to drop a few inches off my girly waistline.

Yesterday, My husband took me to lunch at our friends new cafe’ .  It’s called The WELL!  They create amazing vegan salads, soup, glutenfree breads and treats along with their very own roasted coffee.   Lunch was delicious!  Should I try this???

So today,  I’ve decided to try my hand at veganizm.  Really, I need to go gluten-free!  I bet I would feel better but that means no more bread!!!!

 Oh Lord, you need to help this girl!  She can only do this, if  YOU help her!

OK!  I’m starting with salads that are tasted!

 I hate bland foods!  Did you hear me!  I hate bland diet foods!

This is going to be an interesting journey!  I hope I can get your support and ideas!

 

Chicory and Arugula Salad with Honey Vinaigrette Recipe

Some people like the bitterness of chicory and arugula, but in too large a quantity, the greens can be overwhelming. This straightforward salad tosses the bitter lettuces in a slightly sweet honey vinaigrette to balance things out. Add the crunch of toasted walnuts, and you’ve got a satisfying starter any day of the week.

This recipe was featured as part of  CHOW Easy Weeknight Dinner menu.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 medium head Belgian endive, coarsely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 small head radicchio, coarsely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 1 1/2 ounces baby arugula (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Combine the greens in a serving bowl and set aside.
  2. Whisk together the vinegar, honey, and measured salt and pepper in a small, nonreactive bowl. While constantly whisking, add the oil by pouring it in a thin stream down the side of the bowl. Whisk until all the oil is incorporated. Taste and adjust the seasoning as desired.
  3. Pour the vinaigrette over the reserved greens and, using your hands, mix to coat the salad. Taste and adjust the seasoning as desired. Top with the walnuts and serve.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Everyone!

Irish Blessing 

My Favorite Color is Green,  My Father and my husbands father, have ancestors from Ireland and Scotland.  We love to eat corn beef, sauerkraut and hash. We welcome a  good dark porter beer or a Guinness stout at our table.  As a child, I always wanted to see the end of a rainbow.  A few extra gold coins would have been a nice surprise for my folks.  Today, I’m happy right where I am.  I have an Unfailing Faith, good friends and family around, a wonderful husband to share life with and some good ole’ hard work, everyday!

Here are a few Irish proverbs

Tonight, I needed to come up with a dish that is green:)   So, I searched my pantry, ‘frigerator, chicken coop and garage..that’s where I store, last seasons garlic. I came up with an old favorite with a little twist of sweetness.

We are having a “not so” traditional St. Paddy’s day dinner. Instead we would like to celebrate with an American Irish Breakfast:  Eggs, corn-beef hash, fried bacon, sour dough bread,  coffee with St Brendan’s irish cream.

Swiss Chard with Honey-Roasted Garlic

INGREDIENTS

2 heads garlic
2 teaspoons HONEY
1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons salted butter
2 tablespoons pine nuts
2 bunches (almost 2 pounds) Swiss chard, stripped of stems and cut into 1-inch pieces (10 cups)
Fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

    Cut the top 1/2 inch off each head of garlic, exposing the cloves. Set the garlic in the center of a square of heavy aluminum foil. Pour 1 teaspoon of the honey and 1 teaspoon of the olive oil over the garlic, replace the tops, and fold up the sides of the foil to make a package, crimping the top tight. Bake until very tender and golden, 40 to 45 minutes.

    Transfer the baked garlic to a bowl, including all the juices in the foil pouch. When cool enough to handle, remove the garlic heads and carefully pop out the garlic cloves by pushing up from the bottom; try to keep the cloves intact. Add the remaining teaspoon honey and tablespoon olive oil and gently stir to combine.Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 5.07.24 PM

  2. Heat a very wide skillet over medium heat, and add the butter and pine nuts. When they begin to sizzle and turn golden brown, add half of the Swiss chard. Cook, stirring, until the greens wilt, a minute or two. Add the remaining chard. Once all of the chard is wilted, season with salt and pepper, and cook until most of the liquid has simmered off, another 2 to 3 minutes.

    Add the honey-roasted garlic to the chard, mix very gently to combine, and serve.  you can also add chopped almond and cranberries to add a little crunch.  either way, you will have them coming back for more.

We traveled to East Lansing Michigan this past weekend to attend the Michigan Beekeepers’ Conference at MSU.  We went last year and kind of consider it the birthplace of our new business.  It was during that weekend that we came up with a name and finalized ideas and direction for our bee products venture.  This year, we met up again with Laurie’s twin sis,Deb and her husband Ray, also beekeepers, to enjoy the conference together.  We also were vendors of our bee hive products at the event.

We had a great time learning from veteran beekeepers, spending time with friends, and sharing our passion for bee products with customers.  We had a few questions that we did not know the answers to, so I had to come home and do some research right away!  One question we had was from a lady who wanted to know what propolis product she could put in her eyes, to cure cataracts!  She said she had heard at one session that propolis could cure cataracts.  We told her emphatically that one should not put anything that is not 100% sterile and proven safe, in one’s eyes!  And that also goes for inhaling anything non-sterile into one’s lungs!   In all the research I had done, I had not seen anything about propolis and cataracts.

But I found it today.  However, propolis WAS NOT put into the eyes!  In a study using mice with a sodium-selenite- type of cataract, scientists injected propolis extract subcutaneously, for 3 days, along with the sodium selenite.  These mice did not develop cataracts like those injected with just the soium -selenite.  But again, this study was done on mice and on only one kind of cataract.  Not something I would recommend people try!

The other question we had was how much protein is in a tablespoon of bee bread.  This question came from a young man who must monitor his protein intake carefully.  I dug up some nutrition facts, so I could figure this out.  Here are the nutrition charts for pollen and honey, the components of bee bread.   1 TBS of our bee bread will have .9 grams of protein, 14.6 carbs, 60 calories and .07 grams of fat.  The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein is 56 grams per day for men and 46 grams per day for women.

The Arnold Fitness Classic is in town this week. So we’ve got to tell you about BEE POWER for Athletes!
Hey Arnold, check this out!   Bee products – honey, propolis, pollen and royal jelly can be used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts to improve their energy and endurance levels.  It is suggested that one use several bee products, as they are said to have a synergistic effect when used in combination with each other. It is often suggested that taking 1 tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of bee pollen twice each day will enhance workouts. But pollen is not easily digestible, so much of it goes right through the body and its nutritional value not released into the body.  So, better yet,  take 1 tablespoon of BEEpothecary’s BEE BREAD!  It  is a fermented mixture of pollen and honey.  The honey softens the hard seed coat of the pollen, making all the nutrients in the pollen readily available to the body.  An once dose of  propolis and a royal jelly supplement is also recommended to enhance endurance. One to two hours before an event or extreme workout, an ounce of BEE BREAD can give  that extra energy boost during physical exertion.  An ounce of BEE BREAD after an intense workout will help the body’s recovery.

Many mainstream athletes take bee pollen before competitions but there is not yet conclusive research which supports that pollen enhances performance.  But there is a lot of anecdotal information from people who swear by the positive fitness, energy and endurance effects of bee products.  Our  friend, David, is an ultra-marathoner, running 50 and 100 mile races. (I could sure think of better things to do with 6-8 hours of my time, than doing that!) David uses our bee bread, mixing it with water to make it drinkable – in place of the typical “Runner’s Goo”, for his energy boost.  He swears it gives him an almost instant boost of new energy.

We do know that honey is a healthy, body friendly sugar and is metabolized more like fruit.  Raw, multi-flower, unheated, unfiltered and unprocessed honey is loaded with natural sugars, antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, anti-inflammatories, phytochemicals, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, just to name a few. Natural honey is an instant energy-building powerhouse. (Processed honey is heated and this destroys all beneficial qualities in honey.)

And we do know that pollen consists  of 40 percent proteins, 55 percent carbohydrates, 1 to 2 percent fats, 3 percent minerals. Bee pollen is close to being a whole food; one teaspoon of bee pollen is equivalent to a hearty serving of vegetables. So it makes sense that taking bee pollen prior to heavy physical exertion would be of benefit, but it does remain a mystery as to how the compounds in bee pollen interact.

What exciting times we are experiencing, these days!

We have officially changed our name to BEEpothecary

We found that people started to call us Hive and Honey.  There’s nothing wrong with that. Until you start searching the interweb for our company.  You will find other beekeepers around the U.S of A using hive and honey. We have one in our backyard… You will find a shoe company, lingerie store, boutiques, clothing brands, photography, jewelry and on and on carrying the Hive and Honey name.

We felt we needed to stand out more. We are a unique company that makes the most of Propolis in all of our Skin, Hair and Health Products.

What is Propolis, you ask?

Bees make propolis, which they use to glue the materials of their hives together, by mixing beeswax and other secretions with resins from the buds of conifer and poplar trees. Those resins have natural germicidal properties. For centuries, people have used propolis on wounds and as a remedy for ailments ranging from acne to cancer, osteoporosis, itching, and tuberculosis. Today, propolis is used in the manufacture of chewing gum, cosmetics, creams, lozenges and ointments and is being investigated as a dental sealant and tooth enamel hardener. A number of studies have tested its effectiveness in humans and animals as a treatment for burns, minor wounds, infections, inflammatory diseases, dental pain, and herpes. While promising, the results of these studies are preliminary.  However, propolis does have proven antibiotic and antiseptic properties and may also have antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. I consider it safe and useful as a home remedy.

So… with a swipe of our wrists and the removing of just “Hive and Honey.”  This small deletion, will give us exactly, what were looking for.

A Name the Stands out all by itself.

Where did we come up with the name, you ask?

A year ago, we had a name and logo ready to be published.  It was Honey Bee Apothecary. A Great name! It says everything we wanted it to emphasize.  BEE’s, Honey and Hive Products with medicinal properties.  But, as we were attending a Beekeeper’s conference in Michigan.  My brother-in-law a licensed pharmacist, Raymond Rutkowski, threw us a curveball. He told us that in Michigan, only Pharmacist and/or Pharmacies can carry the “Apothecary” name.   We were to double check our research in the State of Ohio.  Low and behold, he was right and we were again searching for a new name for our company.  On the way home, to Ohio, after a great conference and short family reunion with my twin sister Deborah.  We stopped off at a watering hole to get some comfort food. We decided that a full stomach and blackberry cobbler would help us achieve the maximum level of creativity. AND Shazam!  A powerful force came upon my husband and he uttered these famous words “Let’s switch out the “A” for “B” and add “pothecary”. Making sure that we use two capital EE’s to showcase the BEE. Because the BEE’s make the medicine and they should get all the credit.”

After, almost, a year in business. We have found that we need to simplify our name. So today, We would like to introduce to you, our new name

and show case all of our value added hive products. With that being said I have a ton of work to do. Creating new labels for every product we have, changing out the old logo to the new, marketing our new names in social media and local businesses.  So, Keep you eyes out for us.  We are at Celebrate Local at Easton Towncenter, City folks Farm Store in Clintonville, The Well, down in Lancaster (opening soon). We have a couple of hopeful business in Canal Winchester. When the weather get nicer, we will be at Pearl Alley in downtown Columbus, friday mornings,  Moonlight Market on Gay Street- once a month, and multiple other venus that we will promote as we lock in our calendar.

I thought I would make Blackberry Jam

It’s very complicated. Stick with me and you will be amazed at your Jam making skills!!

Homemade BEErry Jam

INGREDIENTS

Chia Jam ingred 1

  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 1 Cup Blackberries or mixed berries of your choice
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Gather all the ingredients, listed above. Then, put them into little glass bowls and place on a pretty cutting board. (You don’t have to do this. It just pretty to lay everything out – I feel like a professional TV chef when I do it.) If you do do it.  You midas well (might as well) take some pictures and post them to the interweb for ohhs and ahhs Wink!!Chia Jam ingred 2

  2. Now the hard part: Blend all ingredients in a blender, mixer, or a handblender, like the one I used.  Blend until well mixed and berries are pulverized. Chia Jam ingred combined

  4. Dish on to toast, yogurt, with ice cream,  or on crackers and cream cheese, if desired.

Bee Bread is actually Bee Pollen that has been packed by bees into granules, with added honey or nectar. But it’s not just that. An enzyme (saliva) is added to prevent germination, metabolizing the pollen for food, thus preserving the bee pollen benefit nutritionally for human beings and that is how we get Bee Bread.  Many health experts refer to Bee Bread as a complete food. It has been used as a supplement for thousands of years by many cultures all over the world.  Bee Bread is actually what is fed to all of the Larvae and Adult drones within a hive by the nurse bees. A full colony of bees can actually pull in as many as 50,000 loads of pollen a day. Some people see Bee Bread as a performance enhancer in sports and a general health enhancer and that it increases Oxygen uptake and accelerates recovery time in training, though there her been no conclusive medical research to support these claims. Still, rumours swirl that many Olympic athletes use and swear by Bee Bread as a great way to help boost performance.  I have a friend who is a altra marathoner.  Altra marathoners, are people who run 50 mile-100mile marathons.  My friend has used Bee Bread as his main source of protein and energy gel during his runs.  He says when he eats BeeBread he feels like he has air under his feet, like flying. It’s that great boost of energy that helps him to continue on.   I eat Bee Bread not to run 50 miles or even 3 miles, but to work out in my garden, in 85 degree weather.  A quart of water and a tablespoon or two of Bee Bread – Shake and drink.  It works! I get the energy to continue on and finish my work.  Try this yummy Breakfast Smoothie.

Energy Bee Bread Smoothie

  • 1 Tbsp Bee Bread
  • 1/2 cup  almond milk
  • 1/2 water
  • 1/2 cup  Pineapple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 scoop or protein powder – I use Raw Fit by Garden of Life
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Chia Seeds
  • two handful scoops of ice

Blend all ingredients in mixer for 2 minutes- the longer you blend the creamer the smoothie and you won’t get a brain freeze either.   Smoothies are a wonderful thing!
