 Who We Are

Jeannie and Steve Saum, Peter and Laurie Dotson

The Saum and Dotson family friendship goes back to the year 2000, after Pete and Laurie defected from the state of Michigan to Groveport, Ohio.  Steve and Jeannie Saum –  a native Groveport, Ohioan and an Air Force Brat and OSU alumnus –   had lived in Groveport for 20 years and were staunch OSU Buckeyes!  Laurie Dotson and Jeannie Saum met at garden club while attending with mutual friends.   But we really connected as couples one evening a few months later when we introduced husbands and stood in the Kroger grocery store aisle talking for an hour!  One thing led to another, we started attending the same church, and then  the same small group – and before we knew it, we were fast friends.

We had many things in common that bonded our friendship– high school sweethearts, Christian  faith, kids the same age, gardening, serving, DIY projects, camping, hunting, and an interest in sustainable living.  We also had diverse interests and skills in a variety of pursuits that helped enrich our  friendship and complement one another.   Laurie – fine art, graphic arts media, cooking, encouragement, hospitality, prayer warrior; Peter – technology of all kinds, photography, vehicles and engines; organization and leadership; Steve – woodworking, woodsman and nature guy, creative thinking and ideas, a giving spirit, humor and prayer warrior; Jeannie – teaching and learning, research, crafts (knitting, sewing, crocheting, pattern making), problem solving, initiative and drive.

Over the last decade, we have supported one another through job losses, teenager rearing, church break-up, health problems, household and car repairs, the death of parents, and the general struggles of life.

2010 was the year of the bees – the year that Steve’s long reverie about beekeeping came to reality.  Both families got their first bee hives and started learning together to care for these incredible creatures and reap the benefits of their God-given design.  As we have learned more, we have become very excited about the health benefits from hive resources.  We are making and using health supplements and skin care products from honey and

The goal of our blog is to share with others our journey in beekeeping and other mini-farm endeavors, our awestruck wonder at how the honeybee fits into God’s creation, the amazing benefits that come to us from these creatures, and how we can be good stewards of what God has given us and reap the blessings of God’s creation.  We hope our blog will entertain you, educate you, maybe encourage you to take up beekeeping and interest you in delving into the healthy living benefits from the hive!

My family bought a beepothecary wounds stick at the State fair and it has saved my sons lips. It lasts forever, heals his lips and doesn’t sting when they are super chapped. I was trying to order another stick or 2 and could only find the lip balm. Is it possible to buy this still? I’m not sure we’ll make another Ohio winter without it. Fingers Crossed

Hello Monica, We are so happy you have found such great results from our wound stick. Sadly, We are no longer are making a wound stick, but the BEE Rescue cream is the same formula with a new name. In the near future, we will be carry our BEE Rescue Cream in a tube which will give you the convenience of easy application and carrying it. The lip balms would also give you the same results as the wound stick. For your lips and chapped skin.

Thank you so much for your message.

Hello! We just moved across the street from Beepothecary. I believe we have mutual church friends. We are also Michigan natives! We are interested in finding out more about your products.

Well, Hello neighbors! Welcome to our little paradise! We are so happy you contacted us. We would love to get together to have a chat and find out who it is we both know. Plus to have Michiganders right in our part of town is even better. We have lived in Ohio for over 20 years, yet we still consider ourselves Michigan people. Give me a call anytime. 614-450-2339 Looking forward to meeting and talking bees! Laurie and Peter Dotson
